Entropion In Cats: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

You can also apply artificial tears to the cat's eye to make movement of the lid easier. Entropion causes the fur to rub on the eye surface from the inward rolling of the eyelids, causing irritation and ocular pain. Entropion occurs when the edge of the eyelid rolls inward toward the surface of the eye.

Once we were finally able to see him the specialist examined Leo's face and eyes and confirmed that indeed he did have Entropion in both eyes and would need corrective surgery. Leo’s eyes also continued to weep brownish tears especially after eating or during strenuous activity like playing with his Ragdoll sister Shelby or with toys. And he squinted almost all of his waking hours – his beautiful blue eyes could hardly be seen most of the time. We kept a watchful eye on him, and wondered what else we could do to help him.

Entropion

Eventually, the sunken eyelids flip inward resulting in entropion. The irritation from the eyelid fur often causes more squinting and the entropion to worsen over time. In elderly cats, entropion most often develops due to the eye sinking deeper into the eye socket. As cats age, they lose fat and muscle from behind their eye leading to the sunken appearance of their eyes. Entropion can develop in either the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid but is most common in the lower lid in cats.

For cats that required surgical correction, follow-up appointments are necessary, usually within days after surgery. Suture material may be present and will be removed by the veterinarian, although some vets may prefer to use absorbable suture material instead. Veterinarians use Hyaluronic Acid injections as an alternative to surgery, especially in older felines that do not tolerate anesthesia well. HA is a filler-type material that allows the eyelid to be successfully turned outward.

And ask her to tell you the success and failure rates of the surgery she’s recommending. And as the name suggests, puppies may be born with the condition. Most vets will tell you that surgery is the only solution. Entropion is also seen secondary to inflammatory or age-related changes that cause enophthalmos.

The temporary tacking procedure involves placing sutures in the affected eyelid to pull the eyelid outward. These sutures usually remain in place for 7 to 10 days, or until the corneal pain resolves. A contact lens provides a transparent bandage over the diseased cornea to help it heal, and to prevent temporarily the eyelid hairs from rubbing against the cornea. If the entropion persists despite these procedures, then surgical correction is indicated. The most common surgical technique used to correct entropion in the cat is the removal of an elliptical piece of skin from the eyelid, near the eyelid margin. When the incision is sutured closed, the eyelid is rolled outward.

Surgery

An example of this would be loss of the fatty tissue of the retrobulbar area that supports the eyeball. This occurs more often in older animals and cats, causing the globe to sink into the socket and the eyelid to secondarily roll inward due to loss of support. Entropion is usually best treated with entropion surgery.

In some circumstances, antibiotic ointments can also help. There are three general types of acquired, or secondary, entropion in cats. Any cat can have entropion; however short-nosed breeds, Himalayan, and Persian cats have an increased likelihood for the condition. When you bring your cat in for assessment, you should tell the veterinarian about the cat's symptoms. Stitches are usually removed about a week after surgery.

Entropion is usually easily diagnosed through a thorough ocular examination when chronic discomfort, inflammation, or ulceration is observed. A dog with Entropion may tear excessively from the affected eye and blink more often than usual. They may also be sensitive to light and the affected eye may spasm or twitch abnormally. Excessive tearing can cause the skin and hair surrounding the eye to become moist and event become infected. If your dog has Entropion, they may develop a mucus-like discharge from the eye.

Cat and dog saliva turns brown due to oxidation after a few minutes. We would have to wipe this discharge away from Leos face every day to prevent it from staining his fur. The specialist told us that Leo did not seem to have any drainage ducts from his eyes for tears! Although he had normal tear producing glands, he had no place for the water that got generated to go.

Symptoms of Entropion in Cats

Cats without the stubby face of the brachycephalic breeds are more likely to have saggy or droopy eyelids instead of eyelids that are curled inward. Entropion in elderly cats from sunken eyes can’t really be prevented. However, some research has shown that both eyes should have surgery even if the entropion is only in one eye. Entropion is diagnosed during a complete eye exam, which will also likely include a specialized green dye test to check your cat’s eye for a corneal ulcer from the entropion. Cats that are brachycephalic, meaning they have short noses and bulgy eyes like Persians, Himalayans, and Burmese can have entropion related to this facial conformation.

The eyelid may then roll excessively outward or may not be able to close completely. Both these complications can result in irritation of the cornea, and may require either further surgery or a lifetime of protective eye medications. Some cats with entropion require surgical correction and typically have an excellent success rate. A veterinary surgeon removes a small elliptical wedge of skin and fur near the eyelid margin. By removing a wedge of tissue, the eyelid flips down into a normal position and no longer rolls onto the eye. Some general practitioners may feel comfortable performing this procedure, but veterinary ophthalmologists may have more experience.

Treatment

While this is an uncommon condition, it does seem to affect certain breeds of cats, including Persians, more frequently than others. Entropion in cats is a condition where part of the eyelid begins to turn inwards towards the eyeball. After non-surgical treatments and surgical treatments your cat will need some care. Most importantly, make sure that the cat cannot touch its eyes by putting a cone onto it. Also make sure that the cat receives any medications that have been prescribed to it. In less severe cases of entropion, clearing up any infections in the eyes can cause the eyelids to go back to normal.

The stitches were still not dissolved at that time so we put the cone right back on him and left it that way for an additional two weeks. But now as of today he looks pretty good – and seems very happy and peaceful. Leo would have to be put under anesthetic for the surgery and would have to wear a cone to protect his eyes and prevent him from damaging the stitching after the surgery. We were very concerned and worried about the surgery – I am always leery when they have to put a cat under - but we agreed to go ahead and schedule it for Leo’s benefit.

The primary cause of entropion is a genetic or conformational anatomic abnormality in the eyelids. Treatment of the underlying cause of secondary entropion should confer a positive result. This may include ocular antibiotics, artificial tears, lubricating ointments, soft contact lens or tarsorrhaphy to protect the damaged cornea. Untreated entropion is a constant source of pain and discomfort to the cat and can lead to corneal ulcers, corneal sequestrum. Genetically, cats known as brachycephalic breeds, which feature shorter noses, are more likely to develop entropion. During the healing process, the incision area may be red and inflamed with minimal discharge.
